Tips To Change Habits

Starting a new habit or kicking an old one is deceptively difficult. We may have every intention of flossing our teeth before bed or going for a run twice a week, but we often lose momentum after a few days and revert to our old routines.

Habits, good or bad, have the power to affect our lives without even realizing the repercussions sometimes.  But consciously deciding to make a change in developing a new habit with positive affects takes a little more than just making a decision.

Motivation and willpower can only get us so far.  In fact most people are pretty good at starting habits and have the best intentions, but end up failing because they lack follow through and consistency.

If you’re hoping to make some changes, we’ve rounded up the following tips, which have consistently been shown to be effective in helping people develop a new habit.

Get Enough Sleep

If you're tired and sluggish chances are you'll be too tired to do anything, let alone tackle a new habit you're trying to form

Start Small and Start Now

As the saying goes, Rome was not built in a day and also don't do the whole "I'll start on Monday" thing... start now.

Repeat, Repeat, Repeat

Our brains start to form habits when we repeat the same actions over and over. Once we have repeated it enough, it becomes our automatic, go-to response. Experts say it takes 30 days to form a behavior in to a habit.

Change the Circumstance or Location

Don’t underestimate the importance of convenience when trying to form a new habit.

Set a Schedule, Find a Partner

Habits grow strongest and fastest when they’re repeated in predictable ways, and for most of us, putting an activity on a schedule tends to lock us into doing it. Having an accountability partner is also important for many people.
